Modern dance has different techniques, just as ballet does. The primary difference is that Modern dance is codified, and Contemporary dance is not. ![]() They are often thought of as synonymous, but they are different. What Is the Difference Between Modern and Contemporary DanceĪlthough these two styles of dance are rooted in a similar break from Classical Ballet. ![]() Some dancers base the dance on a character, a theme, or a story, and they often add their own unique style to their dance. Today, Contemporary dance is a mixture of different styles, and choreographers take moves from all different genres. It started with dancers such as Francois Delsarte, Loui Fuller, and Isadora Duncan, who broke away from classical ballet and developed unique styles of movement that were based on their own theories about dance.Īs they developed their dance style, they focused more on expression and emotions than formal techniques. The goal is to connect the body with the mind through fluid movements.Īlthough it is called Contemporary, it started in the 20th century and has continued through today.Ĭontemporary dance has a lot in common with Modern dance, and they have their roots in the same foundations. It combines elements across different genres, including classical ballet, jazz, lyrical, and modern dance. The primary difference with Contemporary dance is that it is not at all codified. The modern dance incorporates techniques while encouraging you to experiment with some moves of your own. If you want to learn Modern dance, the best thing to do is take some classes from various teachers, watch the choreography, and experiment with it. People who practice Modern dance are dedicated to the codified styles of Graham, Humphrey, and Morton and some less structured systems. The third generation came along and further refined the moves, becoming more minimalistic. They each created techniques that they taught in their dance classes. This group included Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Lester Horton, and others. ![]() They wanted to express their own inner feelings on stage. The new group created moves based on their own experiences. They wanted to move away from the structure and conformity of ballet, and they encouraged others to do the same.Īnother group came after them, and they are considered the founders of Modern dance. This dance style challenged the art and philosophy of the times and was inclusive of other cultures. Dennis, and her husband Ted Shawn, who was also her partner.Įach of them made contributions to Modern dance that helped it to become a genre of its own. The dancers who led this movement were Isadora Duncanm Loie Fuller, Ruth St. Modern dance is thought to have started in the early 20th century.

So for the planetarium stuff I've been doing recently, where I'm often building up layers of animations additively, it's the only way I can assemble stuff at reasonable speed.īut the moment I want to do something Apple haven't considered (like, say, tweak the colour of an additive layer but clamp the blacks so they don't end up with negative values and screw up the rest of the comp) I'm stuffed. I can throw half a dozen 4K x 4K ProRes files on top of each other additively and hit play and it plays immediately. It's orders of magnitude faster than any other editing package. Just about everything I do (3D work usually) ends up going through FCP right at the very end of the process, just for final edit tweaks and minor colour correction: and it's purely because FCP is so goddamn fast. It's what I both love and hate about FCP. I think what's frustrated me about Motion is that it's so Apple-ish. There are a lot of basic concepts to learn either way, so it's more about what makes financial sense for your available time investment. Once you know what you're doing enough to feel like some things are hard to do, look at some AE tutorials on how to do those things, and see if you'd rather switch.Īlternatively, if you can dedicate a bunch of time to it in the first month, you could spend that $50 on a month of Creative Cloud and start there. If you're really just getting started, I'd recommend dropping the $50 on Motion and doing some tutorials to learn the concepts. ![]() But if you're going to use it regularly (whether for a couple of months or for years), the subscription model may make sense for you. So if you expect to dabble in it and want to have some fun every few months, paying once is probably best. FCPX is $300 Motion is $50 (and can export video on its own, without Final Cut). That said, one of the great things about the Apple tools is the pricing model. Then I got my hands on Premiere for real and realized it had everything I was missing. "As you pick up the toothbrush a tree outside the window collapses. Grabbing Arthur's toothbrush will elicit the response: Like most gifts from your aunt, you've been trying to get rid of it for years." ![]() You are surprised to see it because you thought you'd thrown it away. "Apart from the label on the bottom saying 'Made in Ibiza' it furnishes you with no clue as to its purpose, if indeed it has one. If you type in 'Look at the thing' you will receive the response: "A thing your aunt gave you which you don't know what it is, a buffered analgesic, and pocket fluff." You wake up as Arthur Dent and your first task is to turn the light on, pick up your famous gown and look at the contents of the pocket. As such, he packs even more detail into the story and, this time, that famous dressing gown is mentioned from the word go (it was absent from Douglas's work until the third book). This was not just the first Hitchhiker's book reshaped into a text adventure either, this was Douglas re-visiting and re-writing his iconic book. It was a text adventure game, and while not the first of its kind, it was certainly the first to be written by a best-selling author. "You become one of the characters, in fact, in this particular game you become several of the characters, so you've got to be careful how you treat them, or you might find it coming back on you," he told Fred Harris with a grin. "This is actually turning a book into a game," Douglas proudly announced on Micro Live. He proudly typed Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency on his own Mac II - this early incarnation of modern word processing allowed for a much more precise edit, as he created arguably his most intricate masterpiece.īut, back in the early eighties when he should have been working on his fourth Hitchhiker book, he instead worked on the concept of turning The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy into a game. ![]() He had an obsession with computers he was the first person in the UK to own an Apple Macintosh computer ( Stephen Fry was the second). That would have been a fairly easy thing to achieve, and would surely have been popular you can certainly imagine a shooter in which things turned into whales, or you got 42 points for taking out a bowl of petunias, but that was not what Douglas was out to do.Īdams was convinced that video games were the next big thing. They might have thought that Douglas Adams had simply signed the rights away for a standard Space Invaders style shooter to have a few H2G2 references crowbarred in. ![]() On the surface, many would have written this move off as a cheap cash in. Super Mario Bros had only just been released, and prior to this injection of quality into the video game market by Nintendo, any games that tied in with films or a TV series were looked upon grimly, thanks to the infamous ET game scandal of 1982 (the game's reputation of being largely unplayable resulted in an estimated 700,000 unsold/returned copies being buried in a New Mexico desert - several thousand of the fly-tipped games were excavated in 2014, most still in their original boxes).Īnd aside from a series of adverts Morecambe & Wise starred in for Atari (the games console the notorious ET game was created for), there was very little in the video game world for comedy fans.įor a bestselling author, the decision to move into the world of video games would probably have appeared to have been a little odd back then. It was still early days for the video game industry. It was March 1985 when Douglas Adams arrived on the set of Micro Live (a TV programme developed in conjunction with the BBC's Computer Literacy Project) to tell Fred Harris about his latest innovation - a computer game version of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. But the question on many people's lips may be how did this interesting collaboration between two best friends, Douglas Adams and Terry Jones, come about in the first place? To find the answer you have to go back to the start, namely the start of Douglas Adams's fascination with technology and particularly video games. The intriguing and altogether bizarre story of The Starship Titanic began life not as many people may have believed as a book written by Douglas Adams, or even a book written by Terry Jones, but as a computer game.Īppropriately, the latest Radio 4 special ( broadcast Sunday 19th December) set in the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy expanded universe stars Michael Palin as the Encyclopaedia Galactica, and Simon Jones (Arthur Dent himself) has a cameo. ![]() Are all books available on Kindle Unlimited? Object resizing is kind of the throughline that connects everything, but there’s… a lot more going on here. It’s about every gleeful “son of a bitch” and “what the fuck” I murmured as Superliminal used the power of video games to do what seems so insanely impossible. Where yet another mechanical twist shifts your already shifted perceptions, keeping you on your toes throughout. It’s about that moment where it clicks into place. It’s puzzles are never so tricky that they seem unfair. Superliminal’s goal is to make you the player feel smart and clever. ![]() “Perception is….”Įven in these early stages, there was always a joy in figuring out the puzzle solutions. But pretty soon, you’ll break beyond the boundaries-both figuratively and literally-and fall ever deeper into this dream state where anything is possible. A tiny wedge of cheese becomes an enormous ramp. A large object becomes small enough to pull through a tiny gap. The earliest puzzles are about shifting the size of objects based on how you see them. These tests serve as the building blocks for understanding how Superliminal wants you to think, literally and figuratively altering your perspective in order to solve a number of puzzles. A disembodied and mildly sinister AI voice, very obviously emulating Portal’s GLaDOS, begins guiding you through a series of preliminary tests. Sometimes it’s about sheer execution of concept, and Superliminal thinks outside the box before diving back into the box, and then cloning the box within the box and thinking outside of both of them while firmly within a third you didn’t even realize exists. Not that one needs precision controls in a game like this, but it did make jumping on objects and reaching ledges sometimes more of a hassle than it should have been. ![]() My first reaction on loading it up was that it looked and felt a bit “budget.” The visuals are exceptionally simplistic, the controls a bit floaty and imprecise. Cue the console release, where Superliminal’s mind-bending, perception-altering puzzler finally comes to the living room. But being a console gamer, I didn’t bother looking into it much further. At the time, I remember seeing intriguing videos of the game’s signature “size is perspective” mechanic, where players resized objects based on their perspective. Superliminal first released for PC back in November 2019. It is as much within those categorical boxes as it is without. A puzzle game that is about the adventure more than the puzzles, about how the player comes to the solutions more than the solutions themselves, Superliminal exists somewhere between Portal, The Witness, and an MC Escher painting, and yet is wholly unbound to being defined by those limitations. Superliminal is never quite what you think it is, and in that, it’s always exactly what it’s trying to be. Every time I think I’ve got Superliminal pegged, every time I think I’ve figured it out, it takes another left turn and defies my expectations. That extra weight could make this tool less comfortable to use, especially over longer periods of continuous operation. The main drawback is that this is a pretty heavy device, weighing in at a bit under 4.5 pounds, making it the largest & heaviest tool on this list. This is a very handy feature with these types of tools that are designed to perform various functions across one project. ![]() The blade attachment is via a key-free, quick-release mechanism that makes changing out bits and blades extremely simple and easy. That means that you get the cutting power of a far more expensive model in this tool. This is thankfully not a route that Black & Decker have gone down, and this device comes with a meaty 2.5-amp motor. Many budget models will look to save money by cutting back on engine power. This multi-tool very much lives up to expectations, offering a number of desirable features for an entry-level price tag. Still, all in all, this is a pretty decent tool for a very low price.īlack & Decker has a reputation for producing quality tools that don’t break the bank. While it’s not necessarily going to let you down every time you use the tool, it’s telling that more expensive models have moved away from this basic type of locking mechanism – it’s simply not as good as other, better-designed attachments. Having crowed about the superior attachment devices of the two devices above, it’s unfortunately not possible to do the same with this model.īlade attachment is provided via a simple 4-pin system. On the other hand, its main failure is in the blade attachment. The addition of a variable speed switch is welcome, however, and it allows you channel a little more power when you really need it. The 2-amp motor is a little underpowered compared to some other devices on this list, so it may struggle cutting through the toughest materials. This is a comfortable machine to hold it’s not too heavy and vibration isn’t a big issue either. But if you have the budget and know you will get the work out it, look at it as a long-term investment and you won’t go wrong.įrom the most expensive tool on the list we now turn to the cheapest – you could buy about 5 of these for the price of a single FEIN tool above! Nonetheless, just because it’s a basic model, doesn’t mean it’s not capable of doing a great job for you. It is by far the most expensive item on the list, coming in at almost double the cost of the next priciest. The kit includes a decent number of basic bits and attachments to get you started too.Īll that sounds great, so what’s the kicker? The price. The power cord is a very generous 16 feet in length which is very useful, and it all comes in a very handy hard plastic case (instead of the material cases you get with many other models) which makes storage easy. It holds bits extremely securely and is very easy to use – bit changes can be effected in as little as 3 seconds. In operation, bits are locked in place with the brand-new, highly-effective StarLock Mounting system. All that points toward a very well designed and built machine. Despite all that power, it is one of the quietest models and also has very low vibration. The motor puts out 350 watts of power making it the most powerful on the market. Reviewįirst off, wow! Let’s just start by saying that this is a truly premium tool. While they may not be as well-known this side of the pond, they are well regarded in Europe as a manufacturer of premium, high-quality tools. However, it still vibrates quite a bit, which could have an effect on accurate work – unless you have a very strong hand of course!įEIN, like their rivals Bosch, is a power tool manufacturer hailing from Germany. An anti-vibration counterweight has been added here, which goes some way to solving the problem. ![]() With such a powerful motor installed, the heavy vibration was a problem in earlier models. ![]() A unique (and trademarked) design, it allows for an incredible 1 ton of holding force to be applied, making it extremely unlikely that the blade will come loose from the tool. To that end, they have designed and installed the Hyperlock system on these tools. Rockwell has also recognized that having all of that power is useless if it can’t be delivered where it’s needed. First off, we have the headline-grabbing 3.5-amp motor, which delivers a simply fantastic level of power. This product has a number of interesting features. They have listened to customer reviews and feedback of earlier models and addressed some of the criticisms to produce this premium tool. Rockwell is a relative newcomer to the power tool market, but they have certainly done a great job with the Sonicraft F30. ![]() Traditionally, people with severe pain from VCFs have been treated with reduction in activities other than those which involve caring for yourself, medications, bracing or invasive spinal surgery, often with limited effectiveness. ![]() However, the pain usually decreases significantly in a matter of days or weeks.
